This is a sandy beach, with some pebbly sections, located just to the north-west of Stranraer Harbour, with the harbour wall at the eastern end of the beach. The beach enjoys views across Loch Ryan to the hilly, wild coastline on the other side, and is a good spot for watching the boats entering and leaving the harbour.

A promenade runs alongside it, as well as a grassy area, popular for picnics, or just sitting and enjoying the views. The beach can be accessed directly from this grassy area.

The beach gets its name from the small lake adjacent to the beach in Agnew Park. This is a good place to take children who might enjoy feeding the ducks, splashing about on the pedalos or riding on the quaint miniature railway. A café can also be found in this park, overlooking both the small lake and the beach.

A large car park can be found nestled in between Agnew Park and the harbour, and is the most convenient for the centre of Stanraer. Another smaller car park can be found directly to the west of the beach. Stranraer is the second largest town in Dumfries and Galloway. It has a railway station with connections to Glasgow and a National Express coach service to London.

The town caters well to tourists with a selection of restaurants and shops, a museum, and a medieval tower house.
