Winchelsea Beach - East Sussex

Remains of Smeaton's Harbour

These are the wooden remnants of the failed attempt at building Rye a new harbour, see [[907187]] for the full story. Whilst the eastern stone pier is still extant under the shingle the western one has long gone. This view looks out onto the sands gradually extending eastwards by longshore drift that ultimately doomed the Rye Harbour project to failure.
