Old Portsmouth Beach Photo

Old Portsmouth Beach - Hampshire

Beach between the Square Tower and the Round Tower

Taken from the Square Tower, looking north-west towards the Round Tower at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. Yes it is mainly round despite the straight seaward wall. Between the two towers is a section of the fortification improvements of Sir Bernard de Gomme, during the period 1665 to 1685. There are three Sally Ports along this wall, which today give access to a small strip of beach. This is popular for fishing and when the wind is not blowing from the south-west this can be quite a sun trap.
