Lepe Beach - Hampshire

Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), Lepe

Turnstones are common winter visitors to all British coasts, flying in from Arctic regions of Scandinavia and Siberia where they breed. Some come from Canada. In summer, the upper parts appear tortoise-shell and the head is more white. A few non-breeders stay in Britain during the summer. They can be seen on the beaches turning stones and seaweed in search of insects and shellfish. Here the bird is seen on the gravel car park.
