Clachtoll Beach - Highland

Clachtoll Sunset

Clachtoll is a coastal fishing and crofting village, situated on the Bay of Clachtoll, on the north western edge of Scotland, in the ancient parish of Assynt. It is in the postal district of Lairg, Sutherland, Scottish Highlands and lies in the County of Sutherland and in the Scottish council area of Highland. Clachtoll lies on the B869, the twisting single track road that follows the coast from Lochinver north then east to Kylesku. The road to the south of here is especially tortuous and if approaching from that direction, Clachtoll comes as something of a surprise. At first sight Clachtoll seems to comprise a scatter of crofts and houses, mostly to the east side of the road. The expansive grassy area to the west of the road is largely given over to the Clachtoll Beach Campsite. Visitors should look out for a signpost directing you along a narrow road through the campsite to a car park next to the Clachtoll Ranger Hut. From here you can begin to appreciate the real attractions of Clachtoll. Clachtoll is a great location for doing some wildlife spotting in the sea, there are many different types of whale, dolphin, seals and a plethora of seabirds. In all my time wild camping and travelling through Scotland, I have never come across a location that comes as close to this for peace and quiet. If you don't fancy the wild side so much, the campsite at Clachtoll is very welcoming.
