Castle Cove - Dorset

The ruins of Sandsfoot Castle, Weymouth

This was built as one of Henry VIII's 'Device Forts', sharing the defence of the naval anchorage of Portland Roads with the castle Henry built on the north-east shore of the Isle of Portland http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2408935. Portland Castle survives intact, but Sandsfoot, built on a cliff top, lasted less than half a century before beginning to fall into the sea. These days the approach to the castle from the landward side is through a trim little suburban park, quite at odds with the nature of the ruins.
