Alexanders and wallflowers, California

In the early spring, roadsides leading to the sea and the cliffs themselves are often fringed by Alexanders, a member of the parsley and carrot family. It comes from Macedonia, the country of Alexander the Great. The dark-green shiny leaves are brightened in summer by yellowish-green flowers which develop into large black fruits. The young stems are edible and taste of celery.
