Strange Structure of Iron-Stained Concrete

I had no idea what purpose this served, until this information was provided by Gary Parks: This is the outlet to the sea for pumping out the old Hauxley Colliery workings (and opencast in the 1970s) - the pumping station is in a compound about 300 metres west of here.
