Portobello is a beach resort in the Edinburgh suburbs. The section of shoreline next to James Street forms part of a long, wide stretch of golden sand, backed by a promenade, which leads down to the suburb of Joppa.

The promenade here has a number of benches which make a good spot to stop and enjoy the views over the Firth of Forth whilst watching the world pass by. A number of art installations can sometimes be found along the beach, including Cressida the Tidal Octopus, which can be seen at low tide at the end of the Bath Street groyne.

The Portobello Golf Club is a short walk from the beach and there are a number of cafes and pubs to be found close by. Some free parking can be found in the roads close to the beach but these spaces can fill up quickly in fine weather.
