  • Porth Tywyn Mawr is also known as Sandy Beach, and for good reason. This long stretch (half a mile) of beach is comprised of beautiful golden sand and largely backed by low dunes.

Apart from the Penrhyn Bay caravan site at the southern end of the beach Porth Tywyn Mawr has a distinctly rural feel with a backdrop of fields and the headland of Trwyn Llwyd to the north.

There is plenty of space both on the beach and in the water and Sandy beach is a popular spot for watersports such as sailing, jet-skiing, kite-surfing, kayaking and even surfing.

There is very little in the way of facilities at Porth Tywyn Mawr. For toilets and a shop you will either have to head to Church Bay or Llanfaethlu. There are a couple of caravan parks at the southern end of the beach - Penrhyn, and Sandy Beach Leisure Park. You can find a fairly well-stocked shop on the Sandy Beach site that is open to non-residents/day visitors to the beach.
